 \n\nThrough a blend of archival festival footage\, intimate interviews\, a
nd rare performances\, Radical Harmonies traces the 30-year evolution of t
he "Women’s Music" movement from its grassroots origins to a professiona
l alternative industry. The film begins by defining the genre's mission—
music for and by women—and follows the DIY journey of pioneers like Cris
Williamson and the founders of Olivia Records\, who built their own recor
ding studios and distribution networks in the face of mainstream sexism. I
t moves chronologically from the "girl with a guitar" folk era of the 1970
s to the multicultural explosion of groups like Sweet Honey in the Rock\,
eventually culminating in the 90s punk energy of the Riot Grrrl movement.
Along the way\, the documentary highlights the political and social innova
tions of the community\, such as the creation of women-only spaces and the
early adoption of accessibility standards like sign-language interpretati
on and wheelchair access at music festivals.
