SUMMARY:Transgender Day of Rememberance
DESCRIPTION:Sussex Pride &amp\; Transliance will hold a vigil to honor the 
 Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20th.   The event takes place 
 at 7:00 PM  at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Southern Delaware.  
  This observance is co-sponsored by Salisbury PFLAG\, Rehoboth Beach PFLAG
 \, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Southern Delaware\, and Delaware P
 ride.\n\nThe Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) was started in 1999 by 
 transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of
  Rita Hester\, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil comme
 morated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester’s 
 death\, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transg
 ender Day of Remembrance. \n\nThe Transgender Day of Remembrance will fea
 ture remarks State Senator Sarah McBride. In 2016 McBride became the first
  openly transgender person to speak at a national party convention when sh
 e spoke at the Democratic National Convention.  In November of 2020 she w
 as elected to office and became the first transgender state senator in the
  country\, making her the highest-ranking transgender elected official in 
 United States history.\n\nThe event will also include a video presentation
  from Admiral Rachel Levine\, Assistant Secretary for Health and Human Ser
 vices\, a performance of the song True Colors by Finn Sutton\, and a Readi
 ng of the Rainbow by Sussex Pride Board Member Elizabeth Shea Mantey.   D
 elaware Pride Vice President Amanda White will also be a featured speaker.
 \n\nThe theme for the event is ‘True Colors’.  . Everyone is invited 
 to join us and stand with us in pride. Come dressed as you are or in your 
 true colors.\n\nThis year’s TransLiance outstanding ally awards will be 
 presented to Delaware Pride’s VP Amanda White and the board of Delaware 
 Pride\, David Mariner and the board of Sussex Pride\, as well as Mark Dela
 ncy and the board of Salisbury PFLAG.  The awards are for their dedicatio
 n to diversity\, equity\, and inclusion.\n\nThe event will  will end with
  a reading of the names of transgender and nonbinary community members bru
 tally murdered in the last year.  The Human Rights Campaign has documente
 d 32 such deaths thus far this year.  Once again this year Salisbury PFLA
 G will be providing hand painted ornaments with the names of the deceased.
