Intersex is an umbrella term for people born with sex characteristics, such as sexual anatomy, reproductive organs, hormonal patterns, and/or chromosomal patterns, that do not fit the typical binary notions of male or female bodies. These variations are a natural part of human diversity and can manifest in many different ways, sometimes being apparent at birth and other times not until puberty or later in life. It is important to note that being intersex refers to biological sex characteristics and is separate from a person’s gender identity (which can be male, female, both, or neither) or sexual orientation.
