Intersex Awareness Day 2026

Intersex Awareness Day, observed internationally each year on October 26, is a grassroots day of education and activism dedicated to highlighting human rights, self-determination, and bodily autonomy for intersex individuals. Commemorating the first public demonstration by intersex activists in Boston on October 26, 1996, the observance aims to challenge medical stigma, promote dignity, and call for an end to non-consensual cosmetic surgeries on intersex children. Through community events, policy advocacy, and public education, the day provides a platform for intersex individuals to share their lived experiences and advocate for informed consent in healthcare.

Intersex refers to people born with sex characteristics—such as chromosomes, hormones, or anatomy—that do not fit typical binary notions of male or female bodies. Intersex variations are a natural aspect of human biological diversity.
